Thomas Two of a Kind Shiraz 2021 is one of the bargains of the new Halliday Wine Companion. Thomas wines has really hit a home run with this wine and it's great to see a small winery continue its winning form.
Thomas Wines sits comfortably in the top echelon wineries in Hunter and indeed Australia. They've been a finalist for Winestate Australian Winemaker of the Year and Finalist and Gourmet Traveller Wine Australian Winemaker of the Year and last year were Best winery at the Hunter Valley Boutique Wine Show.
While you may think shiraz is shiraz, I can tell you this wine is unique these days- it's a blend of Mclaren Vale and Hunter Valley Shiraz - a throwback to the 50’s and 60’s where such blends created some of Australia’s best wines - and this blend seriously works today.
This is how James Halliday described it in his latest Companion:
"A 52/48% blend of Hunter Valley and McLaren Vale (Blewitt Springs) fruit. The two components are separately fermented but blended soon after the end of fermentation; matured for 16 months in French hogsheads. A fascinating blend, with major synergy, as each component takes centre stage, but the dusty/chocolate/fine/savoury notes prevail. This is a mighty $25 wine." 96 Points James Halliday
"The quality of the wines and reputation of Andrew Thomas have never been higher." James Halliday
