"From four estate vineyards, matured for 24 months in new American oak and used French barrels. It is very complex, with a darker fruit play than expected from '17, but fills the mouth with all the vibrant flavours of the vintage." 95pts - James Halliday
Maglieri Wines founder Serafino (Steve) Maglieri acquired the 'McLarens on the Lake' property in 1998. The site contains 120ha of shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Grenache. Part of the grape harvest is sold and the best material is reserved for the Serafino label.
Steve was crowned ‘Bushing King’ for best red wine in the McLaren Vale Wine Show in 1979 – an honour he achieved again in 1992 and 2007. Numerous awards have followed including the Trophy for Best Shiraz and Red Wine of the Year at the London International Wine Challenge in 1997 and earning the Trophy for the most consistent Shiraz at the London International Wine Challenge after winning Gold in its class for five consecutive years.
Where this wine comes from - McLaren Vale Wine Collection
Just south of Adelaide in South Australia, McLaren Vale is a red wine drinker’s haven, producing rich, velvety textured reds the state is known for. Looking over St Vincent Gulf, the maritime influence in McLaren Vale helps to keep summer temperatures down while the steady temperatures are perfect for producing balanced reds that are certainly easy on the palate. In a similar vein to the Barossa, McLaren Vale hangs its hat on Shiraz, but similarly, Grenache and Mourvèdre play a strong supporting role – perhaps outshining the star of the show on occasion! Certainly its GSM blends deserve recognition, producing seamless wines. Enjoying its Mediterranean climate, it comes as no surprise that the wines of McLaren Vale are perfect with hearty Italian dishes – ragout, pizza, or an antipasto platter – you can’t go wrong.
