Founded by winemaker Sam Scott in 2008, La Prova explores Italian grape varieties suited to Australian vineyards. Its 2024 Adelaide Hills Sangiovese is a medium-bodied, savoury red, combining cherry and cranberry fruit with dried herbs, warm spice and a hint of blood orange. Chewy tannins give the wine definition and a long, flavoursome finish.
The grapes spend just over a month on skins before approximately nine months in large, seasoned French oak, building texture without masking the fruit. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is also vegan friendly. Mike Bennie awarded it 95 points for Halliday Wine Companion, praising its “quality” tannins and noting that it “finishes exceptionally long”.
