More Information

"In May 2016 the sale by Giant Steps of the Innocent Bystander brand and stock was completed. The former Innocent Bystander restaurant and shop has been substantially remodelled to put the focus on the high quality, single vineyard, single varietal wines in what is demonstrably a very distinguished portfolio. Its vineyard resources comprise the Sexton Vineyard (32ha) in the Lower Yarra and Applejack Vineyard (13ha) in the Upper Yarra; there is also the Primavera Vineyard in the Upper Yarra under long-term supervised contract, and Tarraford Vineyard in the Lower Yarra under long-term lease. Exports to the UK, the US and other major markets." 'Outstanding' Winery Rating - James Halliday

After discovering Yarra Valley wines 25 years ago Lou Primavera planted this vineyard in Hoddles Creek in 2001. Giant Steps has a long-standing relationship with the Primavera family - having sourced fruit from the vineyard for some years.

"A very bright crimson purple. So pure and perfumed with briary cherries, ripe redcurrants and freshly cut roses. Poised, juicy and energetic, the wine has so much tang and crunch, you barely notice that this is also structured finishing with long, gently puckering tannins. A wine with immediate appeal, but also one that will reward at least another 7–10 years in the cellar." Rating 97 points.  Philip Rich, Wine Companion

Where this wine comes from - Yarra Valley

Just 50 kilometres from Melbourne, Victoria’s Yarra Valley is a star of the wine regions surrounding the city, known as the ‘Melbourne Dress Circle’. With plenty of microclimates and sub-regions, the Yarra Valley doesn’t have a weak link. Certainly the region’s reputation has been built on the quality of its cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. As far as Chardonnay goes, Yarra Valley strikes the right balance of ripeness, without going over the edge. There’s white peach, lemon pith and Fuji apple supported by a fine spine of citrus-like acidity complemented by supportive oak maturation. The region’s Pinot Noir certainly produces that ethereal quality that Pinot-philes go crazy for – with lifted cherry notes, texture and length. Pinosity? It’s here in spades. Don’t discount Yarra Valley Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which also have a long history in the region and are being recognised for producing their own unique regional styles. Game on!
