"Fiano is an ancient native Italian grape widely grown in Campania and other warm, dry parts of southern Italy. It's taken root in many Australian regions for the same reasons. The only wonder is that it took us so long to grow it." Huon Hooke.
Fiano has taken off in Australia. 15 years ago, I don't think there was a single producer. Now there are around 50. But there are perhaps no better quality Fiano in Australia than Freeman's. It's one of the reason's Freeman sits in Real Review's Top Australian Wineries list.
If you're new to the variety, then I can tell you Fiano is often compared to a racy, refreshing Chardonnay and here's how Huon Hooke described it:
"Very light yellow colour with a spicy, tropical flower bouquet, hinting at frangipani, lychee, honey and dried mango. The wine has intensity and richness on the palate, good weight and length, a subtle suggestion of oak but if so it's been sensitively used. Medium-full bodied. Very long and drying to finish: an excellent food wine." Ranked
#1 of 40 2022 Fiano from Australia. The Real Review.
