"This is one of those lighter styles of pinot that the Yarra does so well. Yes. This is good." 94pts - Campbell Mattinson - WineFront

More Information

David Bicknell needs little introduction in Australian wine circles having worked for many years at de Bortoli and now at Oakridge where he was recently names Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine, Winemaker of the Year.

Bicknell FC is a family winemaking project of Dave Bicknell and Nicky Harris. The project started as random wines from interesting sites, but as they have moved through the years, getting their eye in so to speak, they have settled into the good fortune of leasing one of those interesting sites.

The Chardonnay & Pinot Noir currently available are from Val Stewart’s vineyard at the top of the hill in Gladysdale. There is 1.0 Ha of chardonnay and 1.5 Ha of pinot noir. It was planted in 1988 with 3,660 plants/Ha, and sits between 332-363m ASL, in red volcanic soil.

"The Applecross wines are always lovely and while $45 is not to be sneezed at it has to be said, in the overall scheme, they represent outstanding value. These are wines to latch onto. This 2018 Pinot is dry and twiggy but the fruit is there, all juicy and jaunty, with cranberry aspects in with the red cherry, and a sheet of spice-studded tannin extending from the mid-palate onwards. There’s a touch of Aussie Bush Spice to the highlights here but the shadows are alive with complex flavour. This is one of those lighter styles of pinot that the Yarra does so well. Yes. This is good." 94pts - Campbell Mattinson - WineFront

Where this wine comes from - Yarra Valley

Just 50 kilometres from Melbourne, Victoria’s Yarra Valley is a star of the wine regions surrounding the city, known as the ‘Melbourne Dress Circle’. With plenty of microclimates and sub-regions, the Yarra Valley doesn’t have a weak link. Certainly the region’s reputation has been built on the quality of its cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. As far as Chardonnay goes, Yarra Valley strikes the right balance of ripeness, without going over the edge. There’s white peach, lemon pith and Fuji apple supported by a fine spine of citrus-like acidity complemented by supportive oak maturation. The region’s Pinot Noir certainly produces that ethereal quality that Pinot-philes go crazy for – with lifted cherry notes, texture and length. Pinosity? It’s here in spades. Don’t discount Yarra Valley Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which also have a long history in the region and are being recognised for producing their own unique regional styles. Game on!
