Plenty of dried rose and potpourri perfume, plum and raspberry, a little dried herb and gentle spicy cedar oak. Medium-bodied, a good amount of flavour with some sappiness and blood orange amaro bitterness. It’s juicy and tight, with a pleasing grainy tannic grip, and a long dry stony finish. Kind of ferrous too. I like the freshness and clean character here, and it has less obvious oak input than usual. I’m touch and go for 95 points really. Delightful. 94+ 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, 24 January, 2023
This latest release seems less oaky than previous vintages which allows the beautifully precise notes of raspberry, red plum and lavender to come to the fore. Carefully judged ripe tannins provide support. 95 Points - Jane Skilton MW, Wine Enthusiast Magazine, Oct/Nov, 2022
This has a complex nose of wild strawberries, spiced cherries, hazelnuts, thyme, nutmeg and bark. Sleek tannins with a creamy texture. Medium body. Silky, long and sophisticated with wonderful depth. From organically grown grapes. Even better after 2023. Screw cap. 94 Points - James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, 5 October, 2022
Tantalisingly aromatic wine with a strong floral/red rose/violet influence. More fruit-focused on the palate with juicy plum, cassis and blackcurrant flavours. Deliciously drinkable wine with cellaring potential. Very seductive. 96 Points - Bob Campbell, The Real Review, 29 September, 2022
The name Dog Point dates from the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. Shepherds' dogs sometimes became lost or wandered off and eventually bred into a marauding pack which attacked local flocks. Their home was a tussock and scrub covered hill, overlooking the Wairau Plains, designated by the early settlers as Dog Point.
Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable wine-growing experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and, James and Wendy Healy. Total involvement by the partners from the vineyard to the winemaking process through to the marketing of their regionally distinctive wines, ensures that Dog Point Vineyards remains a boutique and family oriented business producing wines with a clear point of difference.
