More Information

The Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 is a true Bordeaux-styled red blend comprising Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot with small parcels of Malbec and Petit Verdot. "60/20/15/5% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/malbec/petit verdot. The cabernet fruit was destemmed and crushed, the other varieties kept as whole berries. Matured 15 months in French barrel (40% new). A deep, bright crimson-purple hue. Essence of great cabernet with its core of blackcurrant and boysenberry fruit, as well as a complex assortment of cardamon, coriander seed, black tea and gentle, fresh tobacco leaf. Just as good on the detailed, layered and persistent palate. There is a coolness and restraint to the cassis fruit that builds, culminating in a long, chalky tannin finish. A complete and beautiful wine.  Rating: 97 Points.  Philip Rich.  Halliday Wine Companion.

"Medium-deep red-purple colour, the bouquet toasty, smoky, cedary and dry-spiced, oak tinged. There is intense blackberry flavour backed by trim but firm tannins that provide elegance as well as structure. Refined texture and seamless line, the finish powering long and satisfying. There is richness and density too. A marvellous balancing act: it has a lightness of being at the same time as power and intensity. A superb wine with a big future."  97 Points.  Huon Hooke.  The Real Review

Where this wine comes from - Yarra Valley

Just 50 kilometres from Melbourne, Victoria’s Yarra Valley is a star of the wine regions surrounding the city, known as the ‘Melbourne Dress Circle’. With plenty of microclimates and sub-regions, the Yarra Valley doesn’t have a weak link. Certainly the region’s reputation has been built on the quality of its cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. As far as Chardonnay goes, Yarra Valley strikes the right balance of ripeness, without going over the edge. There’s white peach, lemon pith and Fuji apple supported by a fine spine of citrus-like acidity complemented by supportive oak maturation. The region’s Pinot Noir certainly produces that ethereal quality that Pinot-philes go crazy for – with lifted cherry notes, texture and length. Pinosity? It’s here in spades. Don’t discount Yarra Valley Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which also have a long history in the region and are being recognised for producing their own unique regional styles. Game on!
