This winery and this wine is no one-hit wonder; Duke's flagship wines are made by a James Halliday 2015 Winemaker of the Year, Rob Diletti. He's also responsible for Halliday's cheapest ever 99 point Riesling (Duke's Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling) amount others.
I'll point out I scrolled through the other cabernets to score 98 points over the last 20 years and there were only 43 of them, and that was from 12,565 cabernet's reviewed. So what I'm saying is, this is one of the very best cabernets ever to be reviewed by James Halliday, regardless of price. Think about about, Australia's greatest ever wine scribe has a $34.99 cabernet among his best ever. The wine is Duke's Vineyard Magpie Hill Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and as we alluded to, it's $34.99 a bottle.
So what does Halliday say about it? Read his review below, he doesn't hold back:
"A superb cabernet that will be calling the shots for decades to come. Its richness is spectacular because it parallels the wine's power. Endless peaks of supple blackcurrant and cassis make light of the varietal tannins that can dog cabernet. The price rendered me speechless."
