"Rich, savoury red of medium weight, fine grip and general sense of vitality. Redolent of dark berries, char and pot pourri with faint game meat notes wafting around. The palate is brighter than expected from that sweet earthy hit of perfume, lifted on blood orange acidity and cinched with a web of fine and firming, feathery tannins. It’s deeply flavoured yet filigreed and fresh. A succulent, delicious and classy red of strong regional character. A delight." Rated : 95 Points. Mike Bennie. The Wine Front.
"Dorrien and Shiller vineyard, Light Pass; partial whole bunch fermentation; regular pump overs and pigeage; 10 days' post-ferment maceration; 18 months' maturation in 11% new French oak barriques. It takes some talent to craft mataro that can fly solo as confidently as this. The cool '17 season heightens fragrance and red berry fruit tang, framed by fine, confident tannins and vibrant acidity that promise great potential." Tyson Stelzer.
I always look forward to the new release of Caillard Mataro. What a beautiful but unheralded wine. I consider it to be up to the standard of the best wines produced in Australia- but don't tell everyone or it won't be so damn cheap!
