French Riesling And The Best Organic Wine At Royal Melbourne

Hi Everyone, I'd take a guess and say most readers are familiar with Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, but perhaps are unaware of the 4th great region - Alsace.  As Jancis Robinson puts it " Alsace is one of the great, under-appreciated treasures of the wine world" which means great bargains can be had, just like the Trimbach Riesling 2014 we offer today.  Alsace Riesling reminds me of Clare Valley's international reputation - drinkers are just starting to realise the Clare Rieslings are world class.  And with comments like that above from Jancis Robinson, drinkers are waking up to Alsace Riesling.

What makes this riesling so special is the texture - it's rich and very textural and has an oh so charming lick of fruit sweetness but remains clean & dry.  It's something that isn't made in Australia and is what makes Alsace rieslings unique.

If you haven't come across Trimbach, rest assured this is isn't some made up name brand a big box retailer invented, rather quite the opposite; it's one of the most famous riesling producers in France, was established almost 500 years ago and includes several Grand Cru wines worth hundreds of dollars.

A quick search of Trimbach Riesling 2014 will reveal our competitors selling this wine up to $34, but this is the Cloudwine newsletter you're reading and you enjoy a bargain.  So not only is the $24.99 price tag about as low as Alsace Riesling gets in Australia, especially for a big name producer like Trimbach, it's also one of the best value rieslings in the country.

THE SHIRAZ NAMED BEST ORGANIC WINE AT ROYAL MELBOURNE
The 2016 Pig in the House Shiraz has been awarded the highest honours for an organic wine at the 2017 Royal Melbourne Wine Show.

The wine was awarded the Trophy for the Best Organic or Biodynamic Wine of Show, along with a Gold Medal (96/100) in its class. It was also short listed for the top wine in show, not bad considering it was up against some major winery’s in Australia. The wine was also short listed for best shiraz in show and was up against wines that retail for $100 a bottle.  You can buy this wine for a tick under $20, talk about a bargain.  See below for more details.

Trophy - Best Cab Sauv of Margaret River

2016 James Halliday Cabernet Challenge

Bright, clear crimson-purple - quite striking; a wine made without any compromise in the fruit selection or in the vinification, with a long pedigree of prior vintages of high quality. The bouquet is perfumed, the medium-bodied palate with a full array of cassis, redcurrant and blueberry fruits, bay leaf and superfine, but persistent tannins. Oh, and yes, French oak does make a contribution .Rating: 97 Drink By:2034.  Alcohol:14.3%  James Halliday.

Pig In The House Shiraz 2016

Trophy for Best Organic or Biodynamic Wine
Royal Melbourne Wine Show

96 points & Finalist for Wine of Show

Royal Melbourne Wine Show

"Indeed this is a good shiraz."  Campbell Mattinson

"It probably worked as a talking point at some stage but you'd have to say that Pig in the House is one of the less fortunate names for a wine business. It sounds like a novelty brand but at $30 we're caught between novelty cheap and novelty super expensive; no man's land. But then, maybe I'm just in a grumpy mood. There's nothing wrong with the wine.

Indeed this is a good shiraz. It’s fruit-driven, it’s clean, it’s well-ripened, it gets the overall balance right. It’s damn tasty. Berries, graphite, the suggestion of asphalt. It’s punchy throughout and satisfying to finish. The wine itself: no hesitation in recommending it.  Rated: 91 Points. Price : $30.  Drink : 2016 - 2022. Campbell Mattinson

"This wine has such a lovely label. In the glass, it has an initial, rich warm climate shiraz; impression of baked plums and pepper, before settling to reveal a fruity expression of fleshy blueberries. The palate continues the juicy blueberry theme." Sean Mitchell. http://www.grapeobserver.com

“Organic farming is the baseline for this wine... and it’s appropriately vibrant with fresh, gently spicy, forestberry fruitiness. This is a good-quality, slurpable, rich Aussie shiraz that feels just right alongside the comfort of pub fare.”Mike Bennie, Sunday Tasmanian, 2017

Tamellini Soave Classico Le Bine de Costiola 2015

This wine has been awarded The Gambero Rosso Guide's Highest honour 'Tre Bicchieri' for its 2015, 2013, and 2011 Vintages.

Well-structured, with creamy texture and rich in flavours; including honey, white flowers, stone-fruits, citrus and sweet spice. Delicious. Intense straw yellow with golden reflections. This is well structured and rich in flavours. With an ample body and creamy texture;  it features aromas of stone-fruits, honey, white flowers, citrus, and hints of sweet spice. This single vineyard Estate grown Soave consists of 100% Garganega, a native grape varietal from the Veneto in Northern Italy. Just Delicious!

Trimbach Alsace Riesling 2014

"Wonderful energy and beauty."James Suckling
"A great example of dry Riesling." Decanter Magazine.
"It's refreshing now and promising in the future."
  Wine Enthusiast

Perhaps most representative of Trimbach's house style, this Riesling is wonderfully dry and crisp, with green apple and citrus flavours swiftly followed by a wave of acidity. Mineral notes mingle with just a hint of stone fruit and tropical fruit on the mid-palate, leading into a long, slightly spicy finish. A great example of dry Riesling.  Drinking Window 2017 - 2027.  90 Points. Decanter Magazine.

While New World Riesling has become ultra-fashionable, here is the original version from a French outfit that has been making serious (and sometimes seriously expensive) wines in Alsace since, so it says, 1626. Great individuality and a dry, clean, mineral purity from this "entry-level" bottle, with full-on flavours of lemons, quince and grapefruit. Will work with lightly Asian-spiced dishes, smoked fish or a lemon-roasted chicken. The Independent UK

A creamy white, with fine cut defined by firm acidity, this shows finely meshed flavors of pear, smoke, fleur de sel, anise and lemon meringue.  90 Points. Wine Spectator

"This is very minerally and bright with amazing tangy acidity and crispness. Wonderful energy and beauty. Full body, tangy finish." 93 points James Suckling

"The nose shows restrained citrus and a slightly lifted, very slightly aromatic touch of conifer. The palate is taut and slender, presenting sober, clean citrus flavors. This stands upright and has a wonderful backbone of freshness. I feel it will have more to give in the future. It's refreshing now and promising in the future. The finish is so subtly fruited that this will be worth the wait. Drink now through 2030."92 points Wine Enthusiast
