“A new name to reckon with. The Swinneys aren’t new to vines but the recently launched brand amazed us with its formidable quality… the top reds, named Farvie, are shockingly good.” Huon Hooke, The Real Review
It started in the vineyard: hand selected fruit from two of Swinney's oldest blocks, with precise vineyard management employed to eliminate any excessive exposure to the sun. In the cellar, this wine was whole-bunch pressed, only lightly settled and fermented naturally on high solids in tank, where the temperature of the ferments can rise as high as 20 degrees. These techniques are still highly atypical in the world of Australian Riesling.
2021 has proved to be a mild, and high quality vintage, providing excellent structure, fruit clarity and concentration. The result of all this is a dazzling riff on Frankland River Riesling; lime sherbert, ginger, Jonathan apples and whispers of sea breeze on the nose. The palate is vibrant, cool and intense with pithy citrus, lychee and honeysuckle. A fine spine of fresh yet pillowy acidity drives the flavours and texture to a long, briny and refreshing close.
"A whole bunch pressed Riesling with time on lees. It's from the excellent Powderbark vineyard of Swinney. Pretty perfume of jasmine, lemon-lime Splice ice blocks, lemon sorbet, almond, fresh milk, struck flint. Lovely start. Soft in the palate but with a very, very racy core of limey, zesty acidity, so very refreshing in feel with tension and precision on hand. It belts through the palate, a whip crack of zingy tang and sorbet-like mouth-watering pucker. Great regional character, good detail, bright and oh so vibrant. Acid hounds line up!" 93+ Points - Mike Bennie - WineFront
