The 2022 Hoddles Creek 1er Pinot Noir has been released! I've always thought that while Hoddles Creek are lovely to drink now, they are remarkable in a few year's time. I've always opened two bottles of each vintage. One upon release and one about 18 months later and it's always regret: why didn't I buy more? Don't make the mistake I do. Here's what Gary Walsh wrote on the Wine Front:
“Cool year” says Franco, “So the whole bunch proportion was dropped to 10%. A little longer in cask as it aided structure.” It may well be a cool year, though there’s no shortage of ripeness here. Cherry, cola, spearmint, with something of a toasty toffee richness. Coffee bean and cocoa, toasted almond, a burnt orange and a chicory thing, silty tannin, praline and spice, something of a ferrous edge, maybe a bit old school with all that mint and cardamom pod, a slurry of tannin on a finish of good length. Kind of wheaty and bloody, but interesting. I think the estate wine is better in 2022, though some may disagree. And indeed, I just popped down to the cellar and grabbed a bottle of the 2022 Estate, and yep, it’s a more vibrant wine. Still, the richness and presence here is a thing. Rated : 91 Points. Alcohol : 13.2%. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
