There is one producer in Australia that specializes in Pinot Gris - Quealy from Mornington.
Pinot Gris like Pinot Noir are so distinguished by their site. Tussie Mussie Vineyard, formerly a flower farm, grows in the choccy red, iron rich soil of Merricks North. It’s a generous wine with a luscious stone fruit palate; honey, heavy bottomed pears, creamy classic Pinot Gris. The mud brick homestead and original rambling house gardens are sensitively maintained as a boutique retreat.
When I read about this 2022 wine I discovered about half is put in French oak (10% new) for a short period. The oak adds complexity but it is largely indiscernable on the palate. A stunning pinot gris with generous pear flavour, a hint of honey and some cashew too but it remains dry. It also has a really balanced acidity making it a great food wine but equally one for a drink before a meal or anytime. Ordered more after my first purchase.
