This Masso Antico is the equal highest rated wine in Luca Maroni's Best Italian Wines Annual. For those new to Luca Maroni, he's one of Italy's most renowned wine critics – Italy's James Halliday or Jeremy Oliver if you like and this is one of his highest ever rated wines. We should also point out in was awarded Gold at the Berliner Wein Trophy (Germany's largest wine show).
This primitivo is produced in Puglia, the heel of the Italian boot and it delivers a rich, dense & powerful wine. Many would remember the Amaranta Montepulciano, which also received 99 points, this is more refined, has more interest, and comes loaded with that slurpable juicy fruit everyone enjoys, it's like a little bit of Italian sunshine in a glass.
Full flavoured but still soft. A great example for Australian wineries to follow!
If you as over high tannic Ozzie reds I suggest you give this wine a go. Full flavoured but subtle tannins
Not sure it’s a 99-pointer but for the price it’s pretty stunning. Pairs well with lamb, but being about 99% currants and berries and sugar its sweetness over powers cheese and antipasti. For the price you’d except it to be a weekday wine for the two of you but it gets a bit much when finishing off after food. Great table wine for a red meat and tomato full Italian experience.
This wine is an incredible buy and is easily worth $50, I've gone back and bought several dozen at this price. Smooth, refined and some of italy's best!
I'm always suspicious of deals that seem to good to be true, but this bottle is easily worth $50 - it's beautifully complex but in a manner that everyone will enjoy irrespective of their familiarity with wine. I wholeheartedly recommend this wine to everyone, please try it!
