About this Wine

One of the most classic and enduring red wines from the whole of McLaren Vale.

"Stately 126 year old vines. Raised in 40% new American and French oak puncheons. One of the great wines of Australia. Savoury and rippling with ferrous and dense tannin, intense blackberry and boysenberry flavour, nutty oak, black olives and dried herb. Acidity is firm and pretty zesty, but sits inside the wine well enough, and again the umami almost porcini mushroom flavours through deep black fruit. About the Winery

The Kay Brothers McLaren Vale Amery Vineyards grace the rolling foothills of the Southern Mt Lofty Ranges. Established in 1890 by Australian born brothers, Herbert and Frederick Kay, the Heritage listed Kays Amery Winery celebrated its first grape crush in 1895 and is the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in founding family hands.

Today, the family continues the winemaking traditions in the heritage listed cellars.

Kay Brothers utilise a traditional method of pressing out their wines. Their Celestial & Coq basket press was installed and ready for use in the 1928 vintage to replace older hydraulic and manual screw presses that had proved unreliable.

Where this wine comes from - McLaren Vale

Just south of Adelaide in South Australia, McLaren Vale is a red wine drinker’s haven, producing rich, velvety textured reds the state is known for. Looking over St Vincent Gulf, the maritime influence in McLaren Vale helps to keep summer temperatures down while the steady temperatures are perfect for producing balanced reds that are certainly easy on the palate. In a similar vein to the Barossa, McLaren Vale hangs its hat on Shiraz, but similarly, Grenache and Mourvèdre play a strong supporting role – perhaps outshining the star of the show on occasion! Certainly its GSM blends deserve recognition, producing seamless wines. Enjoying its Mediterranean climate, it comes as no surprise that the wines of McLaren Vale are perfect with hearty Italian dishes – ragout, pizza, or an antipasto platter – you can’t go wrong.
