Mataro, Mourvedre, Monastrell. It's the M in GSM and often found in Cotes du Rhone. It's all the same variety, but we have different names for it. Whatever the case, it's rare to see it as a stand alone variety.
Today we do have it as a stand-alone variety, but get this, today's example has claim to be Australia's best made over the last 12 months - it's Bondar Monastrell 2021 and it has just been awarded the highest score for Monastrell (Mataro or Mourvedre) in the latest Halliday Wine Companion.
Bondar from Mclaren Vale are on fire. Their 97 point Violet Hour Shiraz sold out in a day. The GSM, much the same. Today we have Monastrell and I can tell you this, you will not find a higher rated example of this variety in this year's Halliday Wine Companion. Here's James Halliday's review from his latest Wine Companion, where he rated it 96 points:
There were only 100 dozen of this wine produced. We have 20% of the total production available for sale. It might sound like a lot, but I'm sure our lovely newsletter folk will quickly snap up this bargain.
