Head Red Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Elegance is the feature of all the Head Red wines from grenache, to GSM, to shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Balance is a sine qua non traveller of elegance; drilling down further, Alex Head's handling of tannin is masterful – as here, at 13.5% alcohol! That's meant to be impossible, but clearly it's not. Classic, and kind of old school Barossa Cabernet. Blackcurrant, blackberry, leafy, a little mint and violet perfume, light cedar oak. Medium-bodied, crisp, a fair amount of cranberry acidity, chocolaty tannin, though quite firm, redcurrant and blackcurrant, and a firm finish of good length. Structured, a little tense, distinct tobacco and leafiness, though I quite like that. Good wine. Should cellar really well. 93 Points - Gary Walsh - The Wine Front

Alex Head has long had a source for Cabernet that has been sprinkled around but, in 2021, he thought the fruit was finally complete and could be bottled on its own with 15% Merlot. I agree. It is a robust and focussed wine for the price as it delivers typical Barossan generosity of blackberry, gravel, dried thyme and spicy clove aromas. It’s then vibrant, mid-weight and not overly powerful but at the same time offers a well-balanced and supple package of considerable length.  91 Points - Alex Hughson - winepilot.com

Winemaker Alex Head’s dream to make elegant Barossa wines began in 1999 while travelling through some of Europe’s greatest wine growing regions, along with his longheld fascination with the synergy of good wine, fine food and happy company at the table. Head Wines is all that and more.

Alex follows a traditional négociant model, an old practice where the winemaker does not grow their own grapes, instead working with a number of small growers. Around three-quarters of the grapes that end up in Head Wines’ bottles are sourced from a carefully chosen selection of these elevated Eden Valley sites. All of these vineyards are farmed sustainably using organic principles where possible; yields are controlled and grapes are hand-picked.

Not being tied to his own vineyards has allowed Alex to spend years understanding the strengths and weaknesses of a number of sites in pursuit of his individual style. Alex creates great Barossan wines that are memorably balanced whilst pursuing styles that are intentional and truly of place. This is sublime winemaking.
