Head Wines 'The Contrarian' Viognier 2023

"Real viognier character here with sliced white peaches, lime, lemon, and crushed pears, too. It’s full-bodied with lemon rind and stone with lots of intensity and depth at the end. Drink now." 94 Points - James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

Very light colour with aromas of bread-dough, fresh and dried flowers, and some subtle spice-mix notes. A complex bouquet, which may owe something to (very subtle) barrel use. It brings out something extra in the fruit without adding overt oak character. The texture of the wine is delicious: soft and yet subtly assertive at the same time. Properly dry, with really appealing balance and farewell.

So much white flower, like jasmine, and ginger too, fresh apricot and almond. It’s crisp, quite acidic, but kind of buttery too, lots of crunch, ginger and lemon zest, tight and savoury, with a mouth-watering spicy finish of excellent length. Flinty and firm, but with lots more to offer with considered cellaring. Deft, precise, and beautifully made.

Winemaker's Comments

Each vintage I like to express the Barossa in a contrary manner. ‘The Contrarian’ is my indulgent, creative winemaking outlet and challenges traditional concepts around Barossan Wine.

Where this wine comes from - Barossa Valley

The Barossa Valley is Australia’s best-known wine region and there’s a good reason why. The wines certainly live up to their international reputation, particularly Barossa Shiraz. With long, warm summers, the region produces full-bodied styles with power and panache. The reds are rich and luscious in their youth with dark-berried flavours, fruit intensity and fine-grained tannins, which mature gracefully with time in the cellar. But there’s more to the region than Shiraz. Grenache and Mourvèdre do more than play a supporting role in GSM blends, they’re standing on their own two feet as single varietal wines. And with a new school of winemakers at the helm, the region is in good hands for a long and healthy future.
