About the Wine
The flagbearer of the estate. Sourced from the original plantings (19yrs old) at a low yield of 2.5 tonnes per acre. Only 925 cases produced.Gold Medal & Trophy Winner Geelong Wine Show 2019.
"Hand-picked, wild yeast fermented in small open vats with 15% whole bunches, matured in French barriques (30% new) for 16 months. Oakdene has decided to go for it in this spectacular vintage, and has got off to a flying start with this sumptuous wine. Picked at a modest baume level, it has the power more commonly found in the Barossa or Eden Valley at 14.5%-15% alcohol. This also has fine-grained tannins in best cool climate style." 95pts - James Halliday - Wine Companion
About the Winery
Located in Wallington on the Bellarine Peninsula, Oakdene was established 2001 by Bernard and Elizabeth Hooley. Oakdene's wine maker, Robin Brockett, has over 30yrs winemaking experience in the broader Geelong region.
It is very important to remember that this zone of the Geelong region is very much a maritime climate and thus should be viewed very differently to the inner, warmer plains where the likes of Bannockburn and Wine By Farr are located.
"The quality is exemplary, as is the consistency of that quality; Robin Brockett's skills are on full display. A new vineyard (11km from Oakdene) planted in '17 (to shiraz, pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot, riesling, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon) has increased the plantings from 12ha to 32ha." 5 Star Winery - James Halliday
