Considered by some to be Australia's best white wine.
The wine is Sorrenberg Beechworth Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2019 and it is Australia's most unique and dare I say, best Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. In the past, Mike Bennie wrote "Australia’s answer to, and many respects usurper, of high end Bordeaux Blanc. Indeed, why ape the benchmark when you can be the benchmark?" That was regarding another vintage, but could easily be applied to this new 2019.
Just last vintage Mike didn't hold back saying the 2018 is "Continuing the argument that this is arguably Australia’s best white wine."
And that brings us to 2019. Beechworth had a great year in 2019 and this wine should be a cracker. What I like about Sorrenberg is that fact they 're a tiny estate (2.5 hectares) and have been bio-dynamic farming for 20 years and chemical free for 30. The four wines they make are considered to be in the top echelon of their varieties in Australia. They've been here for a long time doing all the right things and now they're reaping the rewards.
So for $42.99, you can have what is arguably Australia's greatest white wine.
This wine comprises of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon. Most of the Sauvignon Blanc fruit had 8 hours skin contact prior to pressing. The Semillon component is crushed and pressed immediately after picking. This wine was 100% barrel fermented with predominantly larger barrels used. All went through natural yeast fermentation. The extended lees contact helps fill out the middle palate and gives this wine the extra dimension it is known for.
