The final ever Paradise IV Dardel has been released. If ever there was a wine to go out on, this is it. It's the 2018 vintage and it is the best according to Jeremy Oliver, the reviewer who has followed Paradise IV since the beginning. For those unaware, the vines were pulled out after the 2018 vintage as the vineyard owner wanted to retire.
This is a cool-climate shiraz which has scaled the ladder to sit in the top echelon of cool-climate shiraz in Australia. What's also pleasing is the price; this wine is consistently rated 97/98 points and this year it's still priced way less than some of its peers. This particular vintage is something special and here's how Jermey Oliver described it:
It’s not often I find myself reviewing a shiraz that really thinks it’s a high-end pinot noir. That’s what I’m doing here, although – like many a pinot of great breeding – this wine will build depth and structure quite dramatically over the next 5-8 years. Its musky, faintly mocha-like bouquet of smoked duck, dark cherries, raspberries and redcurrants is laced with earthy notes of Pu Er tea and exotic spice. Long and supple, with a plush core of mouthfilling black and red fruit, it extends long, supple and seamless down a tight-grained, drying and dusty spine that is certain to become firmer. It finishes with remarkable drive and savoury complexity. This is something very unique and special. 99/100, drink 2030-2038+ Jeremy Oliver
A multi layered, savoury shiraz. Fresh but also meaty. Fragrant and smooth. Great with food.
I am really looking forward to drinking this, but I feel it would be insane to drink it now and so I plan to cellar it until at least 2023.
As a dogmatic lover of Pinot I rarely stray outside to other reds because I feel they lack the finesse and subtle richness of the Burgundian grape. This wine though is just first rate. A stunning perfumed bouquet and then a lovely rich fruit and rich spices. Can be ***** now but will age superbly. I feel though it may not last in my cellar though! A great wine.
It’s very good, highly perfumed and well balanced. It’s a pity it’s the last ever vintage of this
As a Geelong resident this wine has always been one of my favourites. The 2018 vintage certainly didn't disappoint. it was an excellent example of the wine & will only get better in the years to come. The big test will be to see if I can keep the other 5 bottles long enough.
