"Done well Verdelho is surprisingly excellent....zingy, refreshing style, touch of classy chalkiness to elevate the offering, restrained tropical fruit characters, more citrusy than anything." 92pts - Mike Bennie - WineFront
About this Wine
The 2018 vintage was another hot dry summer, which resulted in smaller bunches and fruit with a lovely intensity of flavour. The fruit was crushed with only the premium free-run juices being used. Fe rmentation took place in Stainless Steel tanks under cool conditions. The wine was bottled early to retain freshness of the primary fruit characters and underwent minimal filtration prior to bottling.
"Done well Verdelho is surprisingly excellent. Here’s one for the fanciers. Biodynamic verdelho perhaps next level. Zingy, refreshing style, touch of classy chalkiness to elevate the offering, restrained tropical fruit characters, more citrusy than anything, good tang of passionfruit, generally just so darn pleasing, racy and fresh. It’s a cracker. Nothing more to say." 92pts - Mike Bennie - WineFront
About the Winery
An out-and-out leader within the organic and bio-dynamic movement in the Hunter Valley wine scene. Fully certified in both aspects since 2007; every aspect of the property is managed in a holistic and sustainable way, Rod Windrim's extensive herb crops, native grasses and farm animals all contribute to bio-dynamic preparations to maintain healthy soil biology.
“Our aim is to make beautiful wine that actually tastes of where it is grown. We use no herbicides, pesticides or chemical sprays. Our focus is on nurturing our vines to good health, allowing the natural cycle of the season to ripen the fruit and then minimal intervention in our wine making. The resultant wines are displaying greater intensity of flavour and a vibrant fresh style with characteristics that are specific to the Krinklewood terroir.” Rod Windrim - Vigneron
The vineyard is located in the southern end of the Broke Fordwich valley and experiences it's own micro-climate cradled within the towering Brokenback mountains. Slightly cooler temperatures and extended ripening periods are well suited to the varietals grown at Krinklewood. The current vineyard was planted in 1998, the whites are located on a flat bed of free-draining loam soil which is ideal for producing classic Hunter Valley Semillon, Verdelho and Chardonnay. In more recent years the winery has added to the vineyard with small plantings of Gerwurztraminer. The red vines are situated on a gentle slope of clay-loam organic soil which is well suited to classic Hunter Shiraz, and a small planting of Tempranillo.
