There's an irresistible velvet glove-like appeal to this wine that leads to an elusive x-factor that only comes with age. It's a high class cabernet blend sourced from a single vineyard with all the bells and whistles thrown into the winemaking and the results show.
About the Winery
I have a major soft for Granite Hills. I used to live in the Macedon Range so call me bias but the Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling are wonderful and dependable wines. Indeed I think the riesling is second only to Crawford River in terms of Victoria best offering of this variety.
Established in 1970 by the Knight family, the vines are the oldest in the region.
"Granite Hills is one of the enduring classics, having pioneered the successful growing of Riesling and Shiraz in an uncompromisingly cool climate. The vineyard includes Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir (the last also used in its sparkling wine). The Rieslings age superbly, and the Shiraz was the forerunner of the cool-climate school in Australia." 5 Star Winery - James Halliday
