About this Wine
Widely planted in Austria, rare in Australia, Gruner Veltliner was carefully selected for its suitability and renowned success in cool and elevated granite country. A lovely food wine, enjoy the gentle aromatics of stone fruit and citrus, textured palate and fresh spicy finish. Just 240 dozen bottled.
"The spicy, peppery varietal character of gruner veltliner is in full stride from the word go, reinforcing its presence each time it is retasted. The very cool Macedon climate works synergistically with the varietal fruit through to the long finish and aftertaste. Gruner veltliner is a kissing cousin of riesling as it expands with time in bottle." 95pts - James Halliday - Wine Companion
"Grapefruit, cooked apple and white pepper. This is a very good example of the variety. Full-flavoured but well-honed. Smells great. Tastes the goods. They are onto something here." 93pts - Campbell Mattinson - WineFront
About the Winery
I have a major soft for Granite Hills. I used to live in the Macedon Range so call me bias but the Shiraz, Cabernet and Riesling are wonderful and dependable wines. Indeed I think the riesling is second only to Crawford River in terms of Victoria best offering of this variety.
Established in 1970 by the Knight family, the vines are the oldest in the region.
"Granite Hills is one of the enduring classics, having pioneered the successful growing of Riesling and Shiraz in an uncompromisingly cool climate. The vineyard includes Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir (the last also used in its sparkling wine). The Rieslings age superbly, and the Shiraz was the forerunner of the cool-climate school in Australia." 5 Star Winery - James Halliday
