"Opened last night, trying again now. I’ve not much to add to CM review aside it’s a fine vintage, a little more fruity than the 2020, but still a finer, prettier sort of release, but does have a fine powdery grip to tannin. Perfume and red fruits, and I reckon will be excellent with a few more years to settle. What a bargain. Score would be 93+, also happy with 94 really for the future. It’s quite an achievement to get this level of finesse into bottle at the price, not least a higher one." Gary Walsh.
"This wine, as we all know at The Winefront, is a modern legend. One day, one fine day, far in the future, this label should win a medal for Services to Australian Pinot Noir.
I wrote the above, I should add, after having tasted the wine. Truth is that before I started tasting it I was a touch nervous; the Hoddles wines are released young, almost rudely so, and in general need a little time to both sort themselves out and reveal themselves properly; reviewing them when they’re still super-young isn’t the easiest task, oftentimes. But, alas, not so this year.
This release jumps out at you. It’s fragrant and lively, blessed with bell-clear varietal fruit flavour, blossomy, tannic and sure. Woodsmoke and oranges, red cherry and woodsy spice, mint and meat. It feels dry and tight but there’s enough here to suggest generosity; this release feels more eager to please than usual, and yet it still feels tight, and the lines of acidity are perfectly threaded. In short, if ever there was a no-brainer Hoddles Creek pinot release, this one is it." Rating: 94. Campbell Mattinson. The Wine Front.
Year on year, it's regarded as the best value Pinot Noir in Australia.
"Hoddles Creek Estate is unchallenged as the producer of the best value pinot noirs in the country..." - James Halliday
A couple of years ago, Gary Walsh on the Winefront wrote "Hoddles Creek probably about the best $20 you can spend on Australian Pinot Noir. It’s almost ludicrous" And I can tell you, that mantra still holds true today. You can buy this with confidence.
Where this wine comes from - Yarra Valley
Just 50 kilometres from Melbourne, Victoria’s Yarra Valley is a star of the wine regions surrounding the city, known as the ‘Melbourne Dress Circle’. With plenty of microclimates and sub-regions, the Yarra Valley doesn’t have a weak link. Certainly the region’s reputation has been built on the quality of its cool climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. As far as Chardonnay goes, Yarra Valley strikes the right balance of ripeness, without going over the edge. There’s white peach, lemon pith and Fuji apple supported by a fine spine of citrus-like acidity complemented by supportive oak maturation. The region’s Pinot Noir certainly produces that ethereal quality that Pinot-philes go crazy for – with lifted cherry notes, texture and length. Pinosity? It’s here in spades. Don’t discount Yarra Valley Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, which also have a long history in the region and are being recognised for producing their own unique regional styles. Game on!
Excellent Yarra Valley pinot. Great cherry colour. Plenty of legs in the glass. Bouquet of cherries, spice and some earth. Taste the fruit and spice. Savoury. Medium bodied.
All at an excellent price point ! POD
