Clonakilla Eden Valley Viognier 2020

In 2020 Clonakilla suffered the catastrophe of losing their entire crop to smoke taint, a consequence of severe drought and the worst bushfire season in living memory. Generous friends came to the rescue with clean fruit from regions outside NSW.

More Information

There's no doubt Clonakilla, across it's entire range of wines, is a compelling proposition. Canberra's best winery, long-time standout of Australia's best Shiraz Viognier, producer of one of Canberra's best Rieslings and arguably the country's best Viognier.

So yep - they have form!

In 2020 Clonakilla suffered the catastrophe of losing their entire crop to smoke taint, a consequence of severe drought and the worst bushfire season in living memory. Generous friends came to the rescue with clean fruit from regions outside New South Wales.

The fruit for this ripe pear, ginger and peach laden Viognier came from the Yalumba vineyards in Eden Valley in South Australia. Thanks to Louisa Rose and The Hill-Smith family for making the grapes available.

"The Hill-Smith family and Louise Rose got viognier to Tim Kirk and the Clonakilla family – a trade-off for losing all the fruit from the bush fire-affected 2020 vintage. I’ve been looking forward to seeing what wines would emerge from Clonakilla from these other resources. Very exciting. Wonderful to see such high pedigree collaboration too. Textural white of grip and high refreshment factor. A serious, complex and layered and intense white wine. Lots of chew and powdery-talc-like qualities to texture, dried pear, ginger, preserved lemon and the faintest wild honey character concluding with really pleasing, spicy-bitter notes. Great energy and drive, refreshment factor and yet plenty of structure, a wine to let come up to room temperature and check out the finer detail in. Feels like it’s in a good place." 94pts - Mike Bennie - The Wine Front
