Dog Point Chardonnay 2016

Jancis Robinson opened the £500 Coche-Dury Meursault 2010, one of the world's great Chardonnays then later followed it up by drinking a Dog Point Chardonnay 2016 that had been opened for a few days.   And yes, the Dog Point came up trumps.

More Information

In 2 decades of selling wine, I don't ever remember a wine critic of international acclaim announce a $39.99 Chardonnay was more exciting to drink than one from one of Burgundy's most respected and expensive names, but that's exactly what happened with Dog Point Chardonnay 2016 and that's the wine we offer today.

Yes, UK's most famous wine critic, Jancis Robinson opened the £500 Coche-Dury Meursault 2010, one of the world's great Chardonnays then later followed it up by drinking a Dog Point Chardonnay 2016 that had been opened for a few days.   And yes, the Dog Point came up trumps.  To use her words

"I also poured some Dog Point Chardonnay 2016 left over from a few nights previously we agreed it was the more exciting wine."

While some may say that's a quirk of wine tasting, I don't think it was a fluke.  It's not just Jancis that's singing the endorsements of this wine, local and other international critics love this wine and you can read their reviews in full below:

"One of the top chardonnay wines in New Zealand, generally speaking. Indeed, Dog Point in general excels at its quarries.  This one is the for the flint and mineral fans. Strong slate and graphite scents, lemon and apple underlying. The palate is racy, whipcracked with citrus/white flesh stone fruit, charged with that flinty mineral thing going on. Sheesh, it’s got some velocity too. In its style, it’s done brilliantly. A fancy racing car of a wine. Cellar long too." - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

"I also poured some Dog Point Chardonnay 2016 left over from a few nights previously we agreed it was the more exciting wine. And, with its light reduction/struck match whiff, it was very similar in some respects to how many of us remember the Coche-Dury wines of the first decade of this century. Except of course for the price.'   Jancis Robinson

"This is beautifully curated complexity, applied to very bright, powerful and concentrated chardonnay fruit. White peaches and grilled hazelnuts lead to a palate with a subtly creamy array of grilled-peach and hazelnut-praline flavors to close. Delicious."  95 Points - James Suckling

"A strong bouquet of smoky toasty oak and possibly some underlying sulfides. The wine is full-bodied, rich and well-concentrated, with amplitude, roundness and length. A full-blooded traditional chardonnay with liberal oak and artifact." 95 Points - Huon Hooke
