"It’s only competition when it comes to being the best gamay in Australia is Sorrenberg." Jeni Port
Along with Sorrenberg, David Lloyd has been doing it longer and better than most, planting most of his vineyard in 1984. Of the 3.4 hectares Gamay is a tiny, yet significant production for Eldridge Estate. Significant in that it has quickly gained cult status, with those in the know clambering every year for an allocation. While it was a a revolutionary decision to plant Gamay at the time, with local vigneron friends questioning the decision. Sorrenberg were earlier adopters of this grape, along with Philip Jones of Bass Philip. Joined by David Lloyd the trio were the first to push style and ideas behind how this grape should be produced in Australia.
"100% destemmed berries wild-fermented and matured in large-format oak. Spectacular colour, spectacular wine. Layer upon layer of plum, pepper and spice, tannins made to order." Rating: 96 points. James Halliday - The Weekend Australian Magazine, Oct 23, 2020
"Cherry, spice, a little dried herb and flower perfume, pencil oak in the background. Medium bodied, wonderful depth of flavour and supple texture, tannin is buried deep, but alive and kicking, cool acidity, fresher red fruits bob up on a long and pure finish. Wonderful." David Eldridge - Winemaker
