Without doubt, the best area for shiraz in Victoria is Heathcote; shiraz from Wild Duck Creek and Jasper Hill have put the region on the international map and players like Paul Osicka produce standout wines year after year. Today I add a new name to the list of wines mentioned above. It's McIvor Estate Heathcote Shiraz 2014 and while the winery has been around since 1997 and has a string of good wines, this is the vintage that has the region talking. It was awarded the trophies at the Heatcote Wine Show:
Trophy: Best Shiraz
Trophy: Best Young Shiraz
Trophy: Best Single Vineyard Wine
There were more than 115 shiraz up for the best shiraz and we'll avoid advertising the likes of whom this wine out did in order to win it, however we will talk about price because this McIvor Estate smashes the idea that good Heathcote shiraz needs to be expensive and is a tick under $30, which not only is one of the cheapest Heathcote Shirazes on the market, it is also one of the most awarded. Big, rich, yet sensationally tight and balanced, that's the style. It's outdone the big names and Cloudwine has the killer price of $29.95.
