"Coleraine is, perhaps, my favourite red wine produced south of the equator.'' 97 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
THE 2018 TE MATA COLERAINE HAS ARRIVED! But get in quick. This is one of the few top end wines that does sell out.
For my liking, Gary Walsh perfectly described Coleraine when he wrote last year: New Zealand’s Grange equivalent, only it comes from one place, is much cheaper, and to my tastes, is significantly better and more interesting" This year Gary reinforces his view writing "
'Coleraine is, perhaps, my favourite red wine produced south of the equator. Exquisite perfume over purple silk sheets of dense tannin. Roll in them. Luxuriate in the quality on off er here, now, and for decades to come. Black fruit, raspberry coulis, sweet rolling tobacco, hazelnut, roses, nutmeg and paprika. It’s tightly packed, with a distinct ‘mineral’ feel to the acidity, concentrated but light on its feet. Dark chocolate and subtle leafy fragrance, long and powerful through the finish, with a deliciously adult walnut burr to close. Magnificent.' 97 Points
As I've said in the past, despite it being world class wine, it doesn't carry the jaw dropping crazy price that turns people away and that's why this wine sells out each year. That's why you should not delay your purchasing decision on this wine this year. The big wine reviewers in NZ and Aust are giving this their big ratings.
Previously Bob Campbell said "A wine that more than lives up to its stellar reputation." And it does again live up it's reputation with this new vintage. If you're a First Growth fan but don't want to folk out the many hundreds of dollars, then walk this way!
